In the heart of hunting territory, the Deepwoods Preserve offers a sancturary to our animal friends. Generations of deer have been born and raised at the Preserve. They seem to know we are animal-friendly and that their babies are safe here.
We are home to dozens of species of animals and birds, and we stock our pond with native brown trout. Our resident snapping turtle controls the frog population, and we encourage black snakes to visit our woodpiles and buildings to keep the rodent population in check. because we do not use poisons.
Hawks, woodpeckers, mourning doves, chickadees, goldfinches, crows, wild turkeys and many other birds are free to hunt and raise their young at Deepwoods. We have red and grey squirrels in residence as well as chipmunks, raccoons, opossems, mice, shrews, voles, moles, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, an occasional cougar (they are NOT extinct in the Southern Appalachians despite what you’ve heard), deer, and the occasional visiting cow that breaks through the fence to munch on our grass. We’ve even seen exotic pheasants stroll out of the woods.
We have a wide variety of trees and wild shrubs including Rhododendrons, Laurel, and Flame Azalea growing on the property as well as a wide variety of wildflowers and medicinal herbs like thistle and ragweed.
Because we are a sanctuary for the rapidly disappearing flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachians, the Deepwoods Preserve is not open to the Public. We have a limited membership made up of committed environmental enthusiasts who maintain the property and visit us several times a year to share ideas and to commune with nature on a one-on-one basis, which re-energizes them for the good of our natural environment.
We are projecting a date of 2012 for us to be at least 50% off-grid. Right now we do not use electricity to pump water to any of our buildings or outbuildings, and we are looking into wind and solar power as we move into the future.
Although we are not yet a 501-c3 Not-For-Profit organization (thus we cannot offer a tax deduction) we DO accept donations. Please visit our donations page for ideas on what and how to donate.
